In my case, the same error occurred but the cause was different: expired certificates.

I was setting zmanda backup and ran into this issue and that’s exactly what happened to me as well. Definitely pays to look at these things closely sometimes. But it would be good if mySQL gave a more descriptive error.

Anyway, thanks for posting this it has saved me hours or days!

Uh, why is this THE solution? It is one thing to check, sure, but I am having the problem and I did not make that mistake.
